Legislative Internship

Office / Department: State Representative Patrick Green

General Description: The office of Representative Patrick Green of the 28th District is currently looking to fill internship positions in their Lansing office. Interns will have the opportunity to assist in the responsibilities of running Representative Green’s Lansing office while serving the residents of Warren and Center Line. Selected candidates will gain valuable hands-on office and legislative experience in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and drafting well-researched responses to constituent opinions and questions.
  • Assisting with constituent casework and working with state departmental liaisons.
  • Drafting tributes, as well as thank-you and congratulatory notes.
  • Researching policy issues and assisting with various legislative tasks.
  • Preparing staff members and the representative for committee, session, and meetings.
  • Participating in legislative walks with staff in Macomb County as available.
  • Fielding calls from constituents.
  • Attending events in Lansing with staff.
  • Attending events in Macomb County with staff (*depending on interest/location/availability*).
  • Data entry, filing, labeling, and other administrative tasks.

Pay Range: This is an unpaid position, but college credit is possible. (See your school’s Internship Coordinator or Academic Advisor.)

Work Schedule: Minimum availability of eight (8) hours per week, Mondays and Wednesdays preferred. Hours are negotiable. Specific schedule to be determined on an individual basis.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be a student, veteran, or participant in job entry program.  Candidates should possess a strong desire to contribute to the team. Strong applicants will have a positive attitude, professional demeanor and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, highly effective written and verbal communication skills, and a willingness to learn about Michigan’s legislative process.  Self-starters with the ability to work independently, attention to detail, dependability, and a desire to improve their professional skills are preferred candidates.  Previous office experience including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is also preferred but not required. Applicants should have a writing sample and references available upon request.

Caucus: Democratic

The position is a non-civil service appointment to state government.  All employees of the House of Representatives are considered at-will.
