Legislative Internship

Office/Department: State Representative Brenda Carter

General Description: IMMEDIATE OPENING - The office of Representative Brenda Carter of the 29th District is currently looking to fill internship positions in her Lansing office for the 2019 summer semester (May through August).  Interns will have the opportunity to assist the Member and her staff with tasks involving policy, communications, press relations, constituent affairs, general office management, and other miscellaneous tasks that are essential to running an office in a fast-paced environment.  Some responsibilities will include answering phones, monitoring legislation, research, and written correspondence to groups and individuals within the district.  In addition to networking opportunities, the selected candidate will gain valuable hands-on experience by attending committee hearings, house sessions, as well as various state and local government events. 

Pay Range: This is an unpaid position, but college credit is possible. (See your school’s Internship Coordinator or Academic Advisor.)

Start Date: ASAP

Work Schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays (preferred availability), some Monday and/or Friday hours may also be available.  Specific schedule is negotiable and will be determined on an individual basis.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be a student, veteran, or participant in job entry program. Strong applicants will possess:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially telephone skills. 
  • The ability to work efficiently and independently. 
  • Basic computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. 
  • A positive attitude. 


Preferred but not required are previous office experience and some knowledge of the legislative process.  Applicants should have a writing sample and references available upon request.
